Do-It-Yourself 3D Movies with Ben Coonley

Saturday, May 9th, 10am-1pm, $35

Learn the “ins and outs” of how to make three-dimensional live action movies on a budget. This workshop will demonstrate the basic principles behind the creation and exhibition of anaglyph 3D photography and cinema. Excerpts from the instructor’s experimental 3D video works will be screened, and 3D remakes of avant-garde film classics will be discussed as background. Participants will be invited to create their own anaglyph 3D “test shots” using two specially-mounted camcorders and Adobe After Effects software. No technical expertise required.

Open to all who like to wear cardboard eyeglasses with cellophane lenses. Equipment provided.

Improvisation Techniques for Filmmakers with Peggy Ahwesh

Sunday, May 10th, 10am-1pm, $35

As a filmmaker, learning ways to relax and engage the people who are in front of the camera is essential – whether you are working with actors in a narrative production or non-actor subjects in a documentary. In this workshop, participants will explore the complex and often spontaneous relationship that exists between maker and performer, and how these relationship dynamics ultimately shape the material being recorded. Excerpts from the instructor’s extensive body of work will be screened, as will other examples of improvisational cinema from Andy Warhol, Jack Smith and Mike Leigh, among others. Participants will then be led through a series of special exercises and techniques aimed at helping to identify, communicate and draw out what is being sought from on-camera performers - be that "acting" or just being "normal."

Open to filmmakers and artists of all genres and experience levels.
