The 7th Peripheral Produce Invititational
The Peripheral Produce Invitational is our annual rock-em-sock-em film showdown that is widely considered the World Championship of experimental cinema. Up to a year in advance, a select group of competitors are chosen by our top-secret jury and challenged to produce a brand-new film, video or cinematic presentation never before seen in Portland. Ballots are then handed out to our audience and whoever gets the most votes goes home with the trophy! To cap it all off, during format changes Bingo is called with the chance to win fabulous prizes!!
The Invitational has proven to be the perfect platform for non-conventional film presentation. PPI 2001 featured Craig Baldwin and Bill Daniel simultaneously running twelve 16mm film projectors. In 2004, Reed Harkness shot a Super 8 film at the theatre as the audience was arriving, and then quickly processed the film in the men’s restroom and projected it during the second half of the show. In ’05 Eric Ostrowski taped film to the sidewalk in front of the theatre for days leading up to the event, and then spliced it together and projected it with an accompanying live soundtrack. Vladmir broke all Invitational records when she became the first back-to-back champ in 2005, winning two years in a row with her signature “communal view-master experience” involving 400 viewmasters for our capacity audience and disks that she photographed, cut-out, and glued together by hand. Last year, 92-year old George Andrus became the Invitational’s oldest champion to date, as he stole hearts and won votes with his stunning soap film video, Dancing Rainbows.
What will happen this year? Who will walk away with the trophy? Tune in to find out.
