Cartune Xprez: Senseless

Cartune Xprez: Senseless

CARTUNE XPREZ presents SENSELESSS, an animated glimpse into the fierce minds of 7 North American artists. From Bruce Bickford’s ever-morphing clay animation to Takeshi Murata’s shimmering digital explosions, each artist subjectively stumbles through a barrage of pop culture to emerge with these shining visions.

Please note that this program contains graphic violence, nudity, and rapid-fire light flash

Downward Dog

Josh Mannis
Infinite loop/video/Los Angeles

A cartoon dog-man performs his yoga routine in endless repetition.

Gylden Road

Hooliganship
1 min/video/Portland

A barrage of 16-bit warriors explodes into a rapid fire assault of costume violence.

Law of Averages

James Duesing
15 min/video/Pittsburgh

LAW OF AVERAGES imagines a lush garden where two lovers meet and begin a relationship that is complicated by a lack of exact compatibility, daily compromise and occasional sensuousness. The temptation in this garden is an interactive theater called The Big Ghost which stars a wild and addictive creature named Vynola.

At the Heart of a Sparrow

Barry Doupe
25 min/video/Vancouver, B.C.

With seemingly rudimentary animation techniques indicative of early video game design, AT THE HEART OF A SPARROW presents a series of casual encounters with fractured beings – polymorphous creatures that are at once neither plant nor animal.

Escape Spirit Videoslime

Takeshi Murata
8min/video/New York

In Escape Spirit Video Slime, Murata digitally deconstructs and rebuilds a peculiar jungle landscape.

Prometheus’ Garden

Bruce Bickford
28 min/v16mm/Seattle

Prometheus’ Garden is a bosch-like clay animation that follows a gushing stream-of-consciousness adventure through gardens, fortresses, and other indescribable wonders.

ABOUT CARTUNE XPREZ

Peter Burr, Christopher Doulgeris, and Cassandra C Jones started CARTUNE XPREZ in 2006 as a way to highlight the energy and spirit of contemporary artists who make sophisticated video work with highly accessible tools. So far this curatorial project has birthed 3 roadshows, many scattered screenings, and a DVD publication. For this year’s PDX Fest, Peter has gathered an 82-minute program of stories that wade through a senselessly mysterious world.

Big Thanks to The Gladstone Coffee and Sweet Pea Baking Company for providing yummy Stumptown Coffee and vegan breakfast treats to help you power up for one last day of marathon movie watching!!
